I like to make a quick checklist of three things to do before I leave my house for any reason. Otherwise I end up wasting my time and/or opportunities. Here’s what I do:
1. Have a Plan
It sounds obvious, but have you ever left your house and not really have a clear destination or path to follow? If so, you didn’t have a plan, and you end up wasting your time when you could be doing something more productive.
Plan ahead and get it done. Increase your productivity so you can spend time doing things you want to be doing.
Why are you leaving your house? Are you bored or trying to wasts time? Or do you have productive business to attend to that will make you a better person? Get out in the world, but do it for the right reasons.
2. Always Look Sharp
I got this idea from the bold and determined blog, and it needs repeating for good reason. Always look sharp.
Your public image is a direct representation of your personal self, so why wouldn’t you want to look your best, especially if you aim to be the best?
I’m not suggesting you always wear a suit and tie, but look a step above the rest for your destination. People are attracted to good looking people, so be good looking. Look sharp and impress. As in dress to impress.
Others want to associate with put-together people. Become a magnet for success by the way you dress.
What kinds of strangers do you tend to avoid? The ones who look like bums – dirty, maybe wearing sweatpants, generally a mess. A high performer has his stuff together. If not, at least he’ll look like he does. So, always look sharp.
3. Be Ready To Record Anything - Have A Notebook (or Other) On The Ready
The notebook is ideal for ideas – you never know when you’re going to be struck with brilliance.
Write down ALL thoughts you have during the day. I often come up with post ideas while I’m farthest from my computer. Luckily I keep a small notebook in my pocket for any lightning strikes.
Another great reason to have something to write with is the opportunities that may arise while you are out in the world. If you don’t have a business card you can quickly jot down your contact information for whomever may need your information.
Keep something handy to write with, inside your house or out. You never realize how quickly your idea will leave you until it’s already gone.
For the digital world, have a handy note-taking app available. I like Evernote personally, and it's free software syncs over all my devices. Take notes, add photos, even record thoughts and conversations. Quite handy.
Have a plan. Look great. Prepare yourself for the world. With these quick tips for things to do before you leave your house you'll be almost guaranteed not to fail.
